Adobe Captivate costs $479.88 per author a year ($39.99 a month on an annual commitment), and Articulate 360 AI costs $1,749 per author a year on Teams or $1,449 on Personal. Captivate is roughly $1,270 cheaper per Teams seat, but it ships with no LMS, while Articulate Teams includes Reach for 300 active learners a year. Which one is cheaper for your company depends on whether you already own an LMS.
This comparison is for the L&D, HR or enablement lead at a US company who has narrowed the authoring shortlist to Adobe Captivate and Articulate 360 and needs the real annual number before a purchase request goes in. The Captivate figures come from Adobe's own US store and its Captivate FAQ. The Articulate figures come from Articulate's pricing page and its support articles. The team costs further down are our arithmetic on those published rates, not quotes.
How much does Adobe Captivate cost compared with Articulate 360?
Per author, Captivate costs about a quarter of an Articulate 360 Teams seat. The difference is in what each price buys: Captivate is an authoring license and nothing else, and Articulate bundles two authoring apps, AI drafting, a review tool and a small LMS into its seat.
| Plan | Price per author | Billing | LMS included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Captivate, individual | $479.88 a year ($39.99 a month) | Annual commitment, billed monthly, tax extra | No |
| Adobe Captivate, teams and enterprise | Quote only (VIP or a three-year ETLA) | Annual, or three annual payments on an ETLA | No |
| Articulate 360 AI Teams | $1,749 a year | Annual | Reach, 300 active learners a year |
| Articulate 360 AI Personal | $1,449 a year | Annual | No, Reach is tied to Teams |

Is Adobe Captivate cheaper than Articulate 360?
Yes, on the license alone, and by a wide margin. One Captivate author costs $1,269.12 a year less than an Articulate 360 AI Teams seat and $969.12 less than a Personal seat. The gap grows with every author you add:
| Authors | Adobe Captivate | Articulate 360 AI Teams | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $479.88 | $1,749 | $1,269.12 |
| 3 | $1,439.64 | $5,247 | $3,807.36 |
| 5 | $2,399.40 | $8,745 | $6,345.60 |
Two things narrow that gap in practice. Captivate's individual price is list price for one person; a team buying five or more licenses goes through Adobe's Value Incentive Plan, which is quoted and may come in lower. And Articulate's seat carries an LMS, so the fair comparison adds whatever you would pay to host Captivate courses.
What each price actually includes
Adobe Captivate. The subscription includes the new Adobe Captivate and Adobe Captivate Classic on one license, 100GB of storage, and 25 monthly generative credits on the individual plan. Team and enterprise licenses raise that to 700 monthly premium credits plus unlimited Generate Image and Generate Text. It is desktop software for Windows and macOS, installable on up to two computers, and it publishes SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC and xAPI packages. Its strengths are software simulations, interactive video and PowerPoint-to-eLearning conversion.
Articulate 360 AI. The seat includes Storyline and Rise, AI course drafting, review links, SCORM, xAPI and cmi5 export and, on Teams, the Reach LMS. AI avatars, multi-format translation and training kits spend credits, which start at $250 for 50,000 and expire at the end of the term. Teams seats belong to the company and can be reassigned; Personal belongs to the individual subscriber.
If a lot of your existing training already lives as recorded walkthroughs, neither tool is the cheapest way to add a knowledge check to them. You can turn a video link into a timestamped quiz and keep the authoring seats for the courses that really need custom interactions.
Adobe Captivate vs Articulate 360 total cost with an LMS
The license is only half of the bill. Captivate needs somewhere to host and track its courses; Adobe's own option is Adobe Learning Manager, a separate product whose billing documentation uses a worked example of $4 per user a month. Articulate includes Reach, but Reach counts a learner once in every 30-day period they train, so 300 active learners a year is about 25 people training every month. Our Reach 360 pricing breakdown walks through that counting rule.
| Scenario | Captivate plus Adobe Learning Manager | Articulate 360 AI Teams | CompanyLMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 author, 50 staff training every month | $2,879.88 | $5,349 (seat plus Reach 360 Pro from $3,600) | $1,800 on Team or $3,600 on Business, billed annually |
| 1 author, 200 staff, one annual compliance course | $10,079.88 (200 users billed all year) | $1,749 (fits the 300 in Reach) | About $1,400 on Business, in the month they train |
| 2 authors, 100 staff training every month | $5,759.76 | $7,098 | $3,600 on Team or $7,200 on Business, billed annually |
The pattern is clear. When staff train every month, Captivate plus a per-user LMS undercuts Articulate. When a few hundred people train once a year, the Reach allowance bundled into Articulate Teams is the better deal. And if nobody on your team is a trained course designer, the author license is money spent on a tool that will sit idle.
Contract and cancellation terms
Captivate is sold as an annual plan with a monthly payout. Adobe refunds in full if you cancel within 14 days; after that it bills 50 percent of the remaining obligation, so leaving after four months costs $159.96. Adobe no longer sells perpetual Captivate licenses. Team buyers choose between the Value Incentive Plan and an Enterprise Term License Agreement, which runs three years with one payment on the same date each year.
Articulate 360 AI seats are annual, and Articulate raised them by $250 a seat from the $1,499 Teams and $1,199 Personal prices it set in July 2024. Hybrid, the bundle of 360 AI and Frontline on one contract, is quoted. Neither vendor publishes a volume price, so put both team quotes through the same approval and ask for the per-seat figure in writing.

Which should a US company buy?
- Buy Adobe Captivate if you have an instructional designer building software simulations or interactive video, and you already run an LMS. It is the cheapest serious authoring seat on the market.
- Buy Articulate 360 AI Teams if your designers want Storyline and Rise, you train a few hundred people a year, and a small bundled LMS is enough.
- Buy neither if the real job is onboarding and required training that has to be assigned, completed and proven. An LMS with authoring built in covers that without an author license.
That third case is what CompanyLMS is built for. Course Studio drafts a course from the policy, SOP or handbook you already have, adds a quiz with a pass mark and a certificate, and assigns it by team or role. Certificates carry renewal intervals and reminders, and the compliance report exports to CSV. Business costs $7 per active learner a month, or $6 billed annually, and admins who build courses are never billed. If you keep a few Captivate or Storyline courses, their packages can live in a SCORM compliant LMS next to everything else. See the full CompanyLMS pricing.
Questions to ask before you sign either quote
- What is the per-author price per year after any volume discount, and is it locked for the whole term?
- How many generative credits come with each seat, and what do extra credits cost?
- For Articulate: how many active learners will Reach count for our training calendar, given one count per person per 30-day period?
- For Captivate: which LMS will host the courses, and what does it charge per user?
- What does cancelling mid-term cost, and when is the renewal date?
If iSpring Suite is also on your shortlist, it prices at 970 EUR per author a year; our iSpring pricing page covers the euro billing and the separate iSpring LMS.
