Skilljar is a customer and partner education platform, now owned by Gainsight, sold as a yearly plan plus an allowance of active users that is counted month by month. CompanyLMS is a corporate LMS that trains customers and employees on one published per-learner price, bought online. If you sell courses or run a funded academy with thousands of monthly learners, Skilljar is built for that. If you need to onboard customers and certify staff without a five-figure contract, the numbers below show where each one lands.

The shortlist

Skilljar alternatives, and what each one charges

Seven platforms a US software or services company compares against Skilljar for customer and partner training. Three of the seven publish a plan price. Every figure was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 26 September 2026; Vendr figures are labelled.

Platform Best for What it costs, and whether you can see it What stands out Watch out for
CompanyLMS Companies onboarding customers and training employees in one system, from about 10 to a few hundred active learners a month Published. Team $4 and Business $7 per active learner a month, or $3 and $6 billed annually. Team has a 25-learner minimum, Business a 10-learner minimum. Enterprise quoted Branded paths live the same day, certifications with expiry reminders, and only active learners are billed No storefront, ecommerce or content syndication, so it is the wrong buy if training is a revenue line

Yearly plan (Essentials, Professional, Enterprise) plus an active user fee on an annual allowance. Pricing reflects each vendor's own pricing or help pages where they exist, and labelled third-party data where they do not. Most vendors quote privately, so treat ranges as planning anchors and confirm with each vendor.

Buying guide

Skilljar pricing, read from Skilljar's own page

Every Skilljar claim below comes from its customer LMS pricing page, its plan comparison matrix and its pricing FAQ, read on 26 September 2026. Third-party figures are labelled.

How much does Skilljar cost?

Skilljar does not publish a plan price. Its pricing page says the bill has two parts: an annual subscription plan, Essentials, Professional or Enterprise, and an active user fee based on how many people take lessons in your academy in a year. Every plan card ends in "Let's talk pricing", and the FAQ answer to "How much is each active user?" is tiered pricing, with the per-user cost falling as volume grows, and a referral to sales.

The only buyer data comes from Vendr, which tracks deals it has seen. Vendr reports a median Skilljar contract of $38,972 a year across 233 purchases, with a low of $23,000 and a high of $99,976. Those are Vendr figures, not Skilljar's, and they include whatever add-ons each buyer took. Skilljar does print its add-on prices, which is unusual in this category and useful: they tell you the floor of what an extra capability adds to a quote.

Skilljar add-onPublished priceWhat it does
Content Syndication$10,000Embeds your Skilljar courses in your customers' own LMS
Data ConnectorFrom $25,000Real-time PostgreSQL copy of your Skilljar data for BI tools
Language PacksFrom $10,000 for five languagesLocalizes the Skilljar platform for global learners

Content Syndication is also listed as a feature of the Professional and Enterprise plans, so if you need it, price the plan upgrade against the add-on before you sign.

How Skilljar counts an active user

This is the part of the quote that decides the bill, and it is easy to misread. Skilljar sells an annual allowance of active users but counts them monthly. An active user is someone who registers and consumes a lesson. Logging in without taking a lesson does not count. Each learner counts once in any month they take a lesson, however many lessons they take that month, and every counted month draws down the yearly allowance.

Learner behavior over a yearUnits used from the allowance
Takes one lesson in March and never returns1
Takes lessons in January, April and October3
Takes a lesson every day of the year12
Logs in every month but never opens a lesson0

Skilljar's own example: estimate 5,000 active users for the year, use 100 in January and 400 in February, and you have 4,500 left. There is no monthly cap, and you can buy more allowance mid-term through your account manager. The practical test before you sign: take your monthly unique learners from your current system, or your monthly new customers multiplied by the share you expect to train, and multiply by twelve. That is your allowance, not your customer count.

Skilljar Essentials vs Professional vs Enterprise: what each plan adds

Skilljar publishes a feature matrix even though it hides the rates. We read it cell by cell. Most of the product is on every plan: unlimited seats and courses, the low-code page builder, learner SSO, the REST API, learner groups, virtual instructor-led training, automations, certifications, custom and scheduled reports, and benchmarks. The plans differ on a short list.

External management (partners manage their own learners)NoYesYes
Content syndicationNoYesYes
Currencies for selling coursesSingleMultipleMultiple

Two rows tend to force an upgrade. Admin SSO sits on Professional, so a security team that requires SSO for every administrator moves you up a tier even when learner SSO was already on Essentials. And the academy site count is the first limit a company hits when it wants separate customer and partner academies. Every plan includes an implementation manager and product support with a 24-hour response commitment.

Skilljar vs Docebo pricing

Neither publishes a rate, so the comparison is about the meter and the contract. Skilljar counts active users monthly against a yearly allowance. Docebo lets you choose: monthly active users, yearly active users, or registered active users, where every active account counts but licenses can be reassigned. Docebo says it is typically best suited to companies training at least 250 learners across customers, partners and employees, that the minimum contract is a single year, and that most customers sign for three to five.

A customer academy where most learners take a course once, in their first month, is usually cheaper on a yearly-active model, because each person counts once for the whole year. On Skilljar's monthly count that learner also counts once, but a customer who comes back for training every month counts twelve times. Model your own return rate on both before you compare quotes. Our Docebo pricing breakdown covers the Docebo side in detail.

When CompanyLMS costs less than Skilljar

CompanyLMS publishes its rate, so the math is short. Business is $6 per active learner a month billed annually. 300 active learners a month comes to $21,600 a year, below the lowest Skilljar deal Vendr reports. 150 a month comes to $10,800. You also get employee onboarding, compliance assignments and certification expiry reminders in the same workspace, which a customer-only academy does not replace.

Be honest about where the math flips. If thousands of customers take a lesson every month, a volume-tiered active user rate like Skilljar's can undercut a flat per-learner price. And if you sell courses, syndicate content into customer LMSs or need three branded academies, Skilljar has features we do not. For a team that needs to onboard customers and certify staff without a sales cycle, customer training on CompanyLMS is live the same day, and the customer onboarding LMS comparison covers nine platforms side by side.

Questions to ask Skilljar before you sign

A Skilljar quote is built from plan, allowance size, add-ons and term. Get these answers in writing:

QuestionWhy it matters
What is our per-user rate at this allowance, and at the next band?Skilljar prices active users in tiers; the rate falls as volume grows
What happens if we exceed the allowance before renewal? You can add allowance mid-term, so ask the price now
Does unused allowance roll over? The allowance is annual; unused units are a sunk cost unless stated otherwise
Is admin SSO required by our security team?It starts on Professional, not Essentials
How many academy sites do we need in year two?Sites are capped at 1, 2 and 3 by plan
Is Content Syndication in the plan or an add-on?It is a Professional feature and also a $10,000 add-on
What is the renewal increase cap?The first-year price is rarely the year-two price

Why teams pick CompanyLMS

One platform for courses, onboarding, compliance and certifications

A price you can model tonight

Skilljar asks for a call before it names a plan fee. CompanyLMS publishes every rate, so a customer success lead can put 300 active learners into a spreadsheet and get a real annual number before anyone books a demo.

One platform for customers and staff

Customer onboarding, partner certification and employee compliance run in the same workspace, on separate paths, with one audit trail. One contract instead of an academy platform plus an internal LMS.

Live the same day

Every Skilljar plan comes with an implementation manager, which tells you the rollout is a project. On CompanyLMS you build a branded path from a template, send the link and watch completions the same afternoon.

Good questions

Skilljar vs CompanyLMS, answered

Skilljar does not publish a plan rate. The bill is a yearly plan fee plus an active user fee on an annual allowance. Vendr, which tracks buyer deals, reports a median of $38,972 a year across 233 purchases, ranging from $23,000 to $99,976. Skilljar does publish add-ons: Content Syndication at $10,000, a Data Connector from $25,000 and Language Packs from $10,000.

Only in part. Skilljar publishes its three plans, a full feature matrix and its add-on prices, but every plan card says "Let's talk pricing" and the per-user rate is given by sales. Its FAQ confirms the rate is tiered, so the cost per active user falls as your allowance grows.

Someone who registers and consumes a lesson in your academy. Logging in without taking a lesson does not count. Each learner counts once per month in which they take lessons, drawn from a yearly allowance, so a learner active every month of the year uses twelve units and one who takes a single lesson uses one.

Essentials includes one academy site, three premium integrations, learner SSO and six of fourteen admin roles. Professional adds a second site, five premium integrations, admin SSO, content syndication, external management and multiple currencies. Enterprise adds a third site, seven premium integrations and a sandbox org. Every plan includes an implementation manager.

It depends on how often your learners return, because neither publishes a rate. Skilljar counts each learner once per active month against a yearly allowance. Docebo lets you pick monthly active, yearly active or registered users, has a one-year minimum term and says it fits companies with 250 or more learners. Get both quotes on the same learner forecast.

Gainsight, the customer success platform, acquired Skilljar on April 2, 2025. The product is now marketed as Skilljar by Gainsight and integrates with Gainsight CS as well as Salesforce, Zoom, Credly, Stripe and Zendesk. Existing contracts continue; ask about roadmap and renewal terms if you are signing a multi-year deal.

Skilljar does not offer a self-serve trial on its pricing page. It offers a product tour and a demo with pricing for each plan. CompanyLMS lets you build a real course in its Course Studio before you pay, then buy Team or Business online with no sales call.

For customer education at scale, Docebo, Thought Industries and LearnUpon are the closest, and none publishes a rate. 360Learning publishes $8 per user a month up to 100 users, and TalentLMS publishes every band from $119 a month. CompanyLMS publishes $4 or $7 per active learner a month and trains customers and employees in one workspace.
