Gusto LMS and Gusto learning management system alternatives
Gusto Learning is a compliance course catalog priced per course, not a full LMS.
Here is what it covers, what connects to Gusto, and what each option costs.
Courses, onboarding & compliance · one platform · per active learner
Gusto Learning lets a Gusto admin buy and assign EasyLlama compliance courses (harassment prevention, HIPAA, diversity and security), each priced per course and charged when a participant starts. It does not build or deliver your own courses. CompanyLMS is a standalone corporate LMS for onboarding, compliance and certification training on your own content, priced per active learner at $4 or $7 a month ($3 and $6 billed annually), with learners imported from a Gusto employee report.
Side by side
Gusto Learning vs CompanyLMS, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.
| What matters | CompanyLMS | Gusto Learning |
|---|---|---|

| Who is billed | Only learners who were active that month | Each participant who starts a course, per course, again at renewal |
| Your own courses | Built-in course authoring, templates, video and PDF lessons, quizzes | Not described. The built-in LMS is focused on compliance courses from EasyLlama |

The shortlist
Gusto LMS alternatives and what each one charges
Seven options a US small business on Gusto weighs. Five publish a figure you can read today: CompanyLMS, EasyLlama, Traliant, Ethena and Engagedly. Gusto Learning shows its course prices only inside the account, and Trainual quotes. Vendor prices were read on 8 October 2026.
| Platform | Best for | Pricing model | What stands out | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CompanyLMS | US small and mid-sized businesses that train on their own onboarding, compliance and certification content | Published. Team $4 and Business $7 per active learner a month, or $3 and $6 billed annually. Team has a 25 learner minimum, Business 10. Enterprise $12. No implementation fee | Course authoring, role-based paths, certificates with automatic renewal reminders and a per-employee audit trail, billed only for active learners | No Gusto app listing. Learners come in by CSV import, or by SSO and SCIM on Enterprise, and completions are not written back to Gusto |
| Gusto Learning | Gusto customers who need a state harassment course and a few compliance topics | Not public. Each course has its own price, shown in the account and charged when a participant starts | Nothing to install, assignment, reminders and certificates inside Gusto, English and Spanish | Compliance catalog only, no course builder, and every renewal is a new charge |
| EasyLlama | Companies that want the full compliance library at a per-user rate | Published. $24.95 per course per learner a year, or $59.95 Core and $89.95 Ultimate per user a year, 10 minimum | 500+ legally vetted courses, phishing simulations on Core, AI course authoring on Ultimate | A compliance library first; onboarding on your own content is secondary |
| Traliant | Teams that need one to three specific compliance topics | Published. $13.95, $21.95 or $30.95 per learner a year by number of topics, Plus add-on $3.99 | Cheapest published rate here for a single topic such as harassment prevention | Priced per topic, and editing courses needs the Plus add-on |
| Ethena | Companies that want short, modern harassment and workplace violence courses | Published. $20 per learner a year for harassment and workplace violence, $50 for the full catalog | State versions for California, Illinois, Connecticut, Maine, Delaware and New York | No course builder named on its pricing page |
| Engagedly | Mid-sized companies buying performance, learning and engagement together | Published range. Learning Suite $3 to $5 per user a month billed annually, $7,500 a year minimum | LXP with learning paths, assessments and certification inside a wider talent suite | The $7,500 floor is more than many small Gusto companies spend on training |
| Trainual | Owner-led businesses documenting processes and roles | Quoted. No visible plan prices, $1,000 implementation fee marked required (read September 2026) | Fast SOP documentation, org chart and role-based content with a Gusto sync | Quote-only pricing and SCORM only on higher tiers |
Pricing reflects each vendor's own pricing or help pages where they exist, and labelled third-party data where they do not. Most vendors quote privately, so treat ranges as planning anchors and confirm with each vendor.
Buying guide
Gusto training, read from Gusto's own pages
These facts come from Gusto's LMS page, its Gusto Learning Help Center article, its Learning Management System Terms and its pricing page. Gusto blocks automated readers, so we read archived copies and give each date.
Does Gusto have an LMS?
Yes, but a narrow one. Gusto calls it Gusto Learning, and it lives under People, then Learning, in the admin account. It is a catalog of ready-made compliance courses that you assign, track and renew. Gusto's own LMS page says the built-in LMS "is currently focused on compliance training including anti sexual harassment training, HIPAA, diversity and inclusion, and data and security training."
The courses are not Gusto's. Gusto's Learning Management System Terms describe the service as the ability to order and assign "e-learning courses developed and provided by Gusto's LMS partner, EasyLlama, Inc." So the content is EasyLlama's, the records and billing are Gusto's.
What the admin gets, per the Gusto Learning Help Center article:
- Assign a course to any number of team members with a deadline, then click Purchase
- Email and dashboard To-Do notices for learners, and a "Send reminder to all" action
- Course progress with an Overdue status, plus downloadable certificates, some with expiry dates
- Bulk certificate renewal, which shows "upcoming charges" before you enroll and pay
- English and Spanish versions with captions, for US employees and for US and non-US contractors with a Gusto profile
What it does not cover is the training only your company can write. Neither the LMS page nor the Help Center describes uploading your own course, building a quiz on your own procedures, or playing a SCORM file you already own. Gusto also notes the courses carry no continuing education credit.
How much does Gusto Learning cost?
Gusto Learning is not a plan feature with a monthly fee. The Help Center is explicit: "All Gusto plans have access to the courses, but each course has its own price," and course fees land on the monthly invoice under a "Gusto Learning" line. Gusto only charges "for participants who start a course," so removing someone before they open it costs nothing.
The per-course price itself is shown inside the account when you review a course, not on Gusto's public pricing page. That page lists the plans you need first:
| Gusto plan | Monthly list price | What it is built for |
|---|---|---|
| Contractor only | $0 base for a limited time (normally $35) + $6 per person | Businesses paying contractors only, no W-2 staff |
| Simple | $49 + $6 per person | Single-state payroll, basic PTO, basic support |
| Plus | $80 + $12 per person | Multi-state payroll, next-day pay, time tracking |
| Premium | $180 + $22 per person | Full-service payroll and HR with priority support |
So the real cost of compliance training on Gusto is the course fee times the people who start it, every time a certificate is renewed. For a single annual harassment course that can be cheap and painless. It gets harder to budget once you add HIPAA, security and D&I courses for different groups, because each one is a separate price and a separate renewal.
For comparison, EasyLlama sells the same catalog directly at $24.95 per course, per learner, per year with a 10-course minimum, or $59.95 per user per year for its whole library. Our EasyLlama vs Traliant pricing breakdown covers both catalogs in detail.
Which LMS integrates with Gusto?
Gusto's LMS page lists six training integrations next to its native app: "EasyLlama, Engagedly, Ethena, Trainual, Traliant, and Travitor." That list comes from the archived September 2025 copy of the page, since gusto.com blocks automated readers; confirm the current list in Gusto's app directory. We read each vendor's own pricing page on 8 October 2026.
| Training app connected to Gusto | What it sells | Published price | Builds your own courses? |
|---|---|---|---|
| EasyLlama | Compliance library of 500+ courses, the same partner behind Gusto Learning | Yes. $24.95 per course per learner a year (10-course minimum), Core $59.95 or Ultimate $89.95 per user a year (10-user minimum) | Course customizations and templates; AI course authoring on Ultimate |
| Traliant | Compliance courses, priced by number of learning topics | Yes. $13.95, $21.95 or $30.95 per learner a year for 1 topic, 3 topics or all 40, plus $3.99 for the Plus add-on | Edit images, text and slides with Plus |
| Ethena | Harassment, workplace violence and other compliance courses | Yes. $20 per learner a year for harassment and workplace violence, $50 for the full catalog | No course builder named on the pricing page |
| Engagedly | Talent suite with performance, learning and engagement modules | Yes. Learning Suite $3 to $5 per user a month billed annually, $7,500 a year minimum | Yes, LXP with learning paths |
| Trainual | Process documentation and SOP training | No. Four tiers with no visible prices and a $1,000 implementation fee marked required (read September 2026) | Yes, documentation-first |
| Travitor | Training platform | Not checked. The pricing page did not load for us on 8 October 2026 | Not checked |
Three of the six are compliance catalogs. They add more courses to what Gusto Learning already does, but they do not solve onboarding or role training on your own content. Engagedly and Trainual do build your own material, and both bring a larger commitment: a $7,500 annual floor on Engagedly, and a required implementation fee on Trainual.
Gusto compliance training and harassment training by state
This is where Gusto Learning is strongest. Gusto states that completing its assigned harassment course "fulfills any state harassment prevention training requirement in all 50 states," and that discontinued versions of a course still meet current requirements for anyone already assigned. For a small team in California, New York, Illinois or Connecticut, that is the course you need, inside the payroll system you already use.
The gap shows up with training the law says you must tailor. Gusto's Help Center points out that since July 1, 2024 California employers must provide workplace violence prevention training, that "you must customize this training to your company's specific needs," and then says plainly: "We cannot help with the customized course." It refers you to EasyLlama.
A customized course is the kind of thing an LMS with authoring is built for. In CompanyLMS you write the site-specific part of the course (your hazards, your reporting steps, your written plan), add a short quiz, assign it to everyone at that location and keep a dated completion record per employee. Our compliance training software comparison covers how other platforms handle the same requirement.
| Training need | Gusto Learning | CompanyLMS |
|---|---|---|
| State harassment prevention course | Yes, ready-made, all 50 states per Gusto | Build or upload your own; no bundled harassment course |
| HIPAA, security, D&I awareness | Yes, ready-made, priced per course | Build your own or use a template |
| California workplace violence prevention, customized | No. Gusto refers you to EasyLlama | Yes, write the site-specific course and quiz |
| Role-based onboarding and SOP training | No | Yes, paths by team, role or person |
| Certificates with expiry and reminders | Yes, on courses that expire | Yes, on any course you mark as a certification |
Gusto training for employees beyond compliance

Gusto already handles the paperwork side of onboarding: offer letters, I-9 and W-4, direct deposit and checklists. What it leaves open is everything a new hire has to learn, and everything you later need to prove they learned: the opening procedure at the store, the lockout steps on line 3, the client intake process, the product training for a new sales rep.
That is the job of a standalone LMS. In CompanyLMS a manager builds a course from a template, video or PDF in minutes, adds a quiz, groups courses into an onboarding path for a role, and assigns it the day the person starts. Completions, scores and certificate expiry sit on one record per employee and export to CSV for an audit or an insurance renewal.
Cost is predictable for a small business. CompanyLMS Team is $4 per active learner a month ($3 billed annually) with a 25-learner minimum, so a 25-person company pays $75 a month on annual billing. Business is $7 ($6 annually) with a 10-learner minimum and adds role-based paths, compliance and certification tracking with reminders, and the skills matrix. People who did not train that month are not billed. Full plans are on the pricing page.
The honest limit: CompanyLMS has no Gusto app listing today. You export the employee list from a Gusto report and import it by CSV, or connect SSO and SCIM on Enterprise, and completions stay in CompanyLMS rather than flowing back into Gusto.
How to choose an LMS for a Gusto company
Stay with Gusto Learning if your training is a handful of state-mandated compliance courses and you like paying per course on the payroll invoice. It is the least work of any option here.
Add a compliance catalog such as EasyLlama, Traliant or Ethena if you need more topics than Gusto's catalog covers, or want an annual per-learner rate you can budget instead of a per-course charge. All three publish prices.
Add a standalone LMS if your problem is your own content: onboarding by role, procedures, product knowledge, customized California workplace violence training, or certifications you issue yourself. That is where CompanyLMS fits, at a per-active-learner rate you can read before talking to anyone.
Many Gusto companies end up with both: Gusto Learning for the mandated harassment course, and an LMS for everything specific to the business. If you are also comparing the other payroll suites, our BambooHR LMS alternatives and Rippling LMS alternatives pages cover how their training modules are priced.
Why teams pick CompanyLMS
One platform for courses, onboarding, compliance and certifications
Train on your own content
Gusto Learning sells compliance courses. CompanyLMS builds the onboarding paths, procedures and product training that only your business can write, in minutes from a template, video or PDF.
One rate instead of per-course charges
Gusto bills each course for each participant who starts it. CompanyLMS bills active learners a month, so adding a course for the whole team does not add a line to the invoice.
Certifications you issue
Mark any course as a certification with an expiry date. CompanyLMS reminds people before it lapses and keeps a per-employee audit trail you can export as CSV.
