Compare · Nonprofit training vendors
Best LMS for nonprofits and volunteer training software
The best LMS for a nonprofit onboards each new staff member and volunteer on day one, repeats required training on a schedule, and gives the executive director one record to show a funder, an insurer or a board.
Most vendors price for corporate headcounts and some say outright that they offer no nonprofit discount. CompanyLMS publishes $7 per learner seat a month ($3.50 billed annually), so a 75-person organization sees the whole bill before a sales call.
Courses, onboarding & compliance · one platform · per learner
Nonprofit buyers are usually one operations or HR person with a small budget, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, and a funder or insurer who asks for proof of training. CompanyLMS publishes a per learner seat price, lets you build onboarding and policy courses from your own handbook, assigns by program and role, and keeps dated completion records with renewal reminders. Choose it when you want to own the content and the record; choose a content-library vendor if buying finished courses matters more than building your own.

Nonprofit training vendors vs CompanyLMS, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.
| What matters | CompanyLMS | Nonprofit training vendors |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | $7 per learner seat a month on Business, $3.50 billed annually, 10-learner minimum | TalentLMS prints user bands, Coursera for Teams prints $399 per user a year, iSpring prints rates from 100 users |
| Nonprofit pricing | One published seat price, no separate nonprofit tier to negotiate | Coursera lists 25% off Teams for registered nonprofits; iSpring states plans carry no nonprofit discount |
| Your own handbook as courses | Build lessons and quizzes from your policies in Course Studio | Library vendors sell their catalog; custom content is extra work or cost |
| Programs and roles | Teams by program or site, paths by role and start date on Business | Available on most platforms, sometimes a higher tier |
| Recurring training | Renewal intervals with reminders before the due date, CSV export of status | Varies; ask whether recurring assignment is included |

The shortlist
Nonprofit LMS options and how each one prices
All four publish a rate. TalentLMS, Coursera for Teams and iSpring figures come from each vendor's own pricing and terms pages read in September and October 2026; CompanyLMS is our own product.
| Platform | Best for | Published price | What stands out | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TalentLMS | Steady rosters of 40 to 500 people that fit inside a user band | Published. Core from $119 a month billed yearly for up to 40 users; Grow to 500 users; Pro to 1,000 | Lowest published sticker price at steady headcount | Crossing a band moves the whole plan; confirm how inactive volunteers count as users |
| Coursera for Teams | Nonprofits that want a large catalog of professional courses for staff, not their own procedures | Published. $399 per user a year, with 25% off for registered nonprofits, which is $299.25 | Large course catalog and a stated nonprofit discount | Built for 2 to 499 learners buying catalog content, not for teaching your own policies to volunteers |
| iSpring LMS | Organizations of 100 or more that already build courses in PowerPoint | Published by volume from 100 users, $6.91 per user a month at 100 users | Transparent tiers and strong authoring heritage | No published rate under 100 users, and its terms state no nonprofit discount on subscription plans |
| CompanyLMS Business | Nonprofits that want to build onboarding and policy courses from their own handbook and track renewals by program and role | Published. $7 per learner seat a month, $3.50 billed annually, 10-learner minimum | Course Studio with quizzes, role paths, renewal reminders, compliance board and CSV export in one price | No prebuilt safeguarding or grant compliance course catalog; you supply the content |
Pricing reflects each vendor's own pricing or help pages where they exist, and labelled third-party data where they do not. Most vendors quote privately, so treat ranges as planning anchors and confirm with each vendor.
Buying guide
Nonprofit LMS pricing and buying guide
What training software costs a nonprofit, what funders and insurers ask for, and how to choose for your size.
How much does an LMS cost for a nonprofit?
A nonprofit LMS runs from a published $119 a month for up to 40 users on TalentLMS to $299.25 per user a year on Coursera for Teams after its nonprofit discount, and CompanyLMS Business is $7 per learner seat a month or $3.50 billed annually. The number that matters is how many people you must enroll, since volunteers count as learners on most plans.
Here is our arithmetic on CompanyLMS published rates for three typical nonprofit sizes, paid staff plus active volunteers.
| Learner seats | Billed annually at $3.50 | Billed monthly at $7 |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | $1,260 a year | $2,520 a year |
| 75 | $3,150 a year | $6,300 a year |
| 150 | $6,300 a year | $12,600 a year |
For comparison, 30 seats on Coursera for Teams at the nonprofit rate is $8,977.50 a year before any volume discount, because it is priced as a catalog. See the full TalentLMS pricing bands to compare a user-band plan.
What training does a nonprofit have to track?
A nonprofit needs dated proof that staff and volunteers completed the training its funders, insurer, licensing body and own policies require. The usual list depends on the mission, but it commonly includes:
- Orientation. Mission, code of conduct, confidentiality and how to report a concern.
- Safeguarding. Organizations working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people typically need background checks and training before a volunteer is alone with clients.
- Harassment prevention and workplace conduct. Required for staff in many states.
- Privacy and data handling. Donor records, client files and, for health programs, HIPAA.
- Site safety and role procedures. Food handling in a pantry, driver safety, cash handling at events.
Check your state and your funder agreements for the exact requirements. The LMS does not decide the content; it assigns it, repeats it and keeps the proof.
How do you train volunteers who come and go?
Put orientation in a short self-paced course with a quiz, assign it when the volunteer signs up, and do not let them start a shift until the record shows a pass. That replaces the repeated in-person briefing that eats coordinator time.
Seat count is the cost lever. Because CompanyLMS is priced per learner seat, you size the account to the people you actively train, and you can review who is enrolled before each season. Confirm with any vendor how it counts people who finish orientation and then go quiet. For the same seasonal staffing problem priced out for retail, read the mobile LMS software for retail comparison.
Which option fits which nonprofit?
Pick by whether you want to buy courses or teach your own rules, because every option here can assign, track and report.
- You want a broad catalog of professional courses for paid staff: Coursera for Teams, with the 25% nonprofit discount.
- Lowest published sticker for a steady roster under 500: TalentLMS user bands.
- 100 or more learners and courses authored in PowerPoint: iSpring, with no nonprofit discount.
- Your own handbook and volunteer rules as tested courses, with renewals and a published per-person price: CompanyLMS Business.
Is CompanyLMS a good LMS for nonprofits?
For an operations lead or program director who wants to turn an existing handbook into tested onboarding courses, assign them by program and role, and keep renewals on schedule, yes, and the price is visible before you talk to anyone. Each program or site is a team and the compliance board shows who is behind.
Where it is not the right pick: if you need a finished library of safeguarding or grant compliance courses written and kept current by a vendor, buy that from a specialist and use an LMS only for your own content. To see the build flow, open Course Studio above and paste a section of your volunteer handbook. The same pattern applies to employee onboarding software for paid staff.
Why teams pick CompanyLMS
One platform for courses, onboarding, compliance and certifications
Day-one onboarding
Staff and volunteers get the mission, safety and policy lessons the moment they are added, with a due date, instead of a binder handed over on a busy shift.
Required training that repeats
Safeguarding, harassment prevention, privacy and site safety each carry a renewal interval, so a record moves from current to due to overdue by itself.
Your handbook, tested
Turn your own procedures into short lessons with a quiz and a pass mark, so the record shows people understood the rules, not only that they opened a page.
Proof for funders and insurers
Who completed what, on which date, with what score, as a CSV your director can attach to a grant report or an insurance renewal.
